Sense Training

Sense perception is an embodied power, depending on an individuals physical as well as mental faculties. The sensorial activities present two physical challenges (applying the sense and accurately manipulating the materials) and two mental challenges (exercising both memory and judgement when matching, grouping and ordering the materials). Sense training also helps to build sound concepts with the appropriate language

Mathamatical Apparatus

Through a carefully structured series of didactic materials the child learns concepts through concrete activities and then he/she is gradually helped towards abstraction. The activities are individual as each child develops at a different rate. Mathematical apparatus gives the child an understanding of basic mathematical rules.

Language Materials

Language materials help a child to develop their language skills, which are listening, speaking, and later reading and writing. By using the sandpaper letters the child learns both the sounds and shapes of the letter. He/She listens to the sounds in words and begins to build them using the Montessori method. The Montessori method embraces the phonic approach to teaching children to read and write. The child is taught to read only after careful preparation and when he/she shows they are ready. The child will succeed and find reading an enjoyable activity. Furthermore, while the child is absorbing his/her own language in the Montessori method, he/she is exposed to games which introduce him/her to the correct use of grammar. This approach helps to build sound foundations for the future.

Pre-number

These exercises are introduced when the child understands some mathematical concepts such as pairing, sorting, and grouping. As each child progresses at their own pace there is no set age for attending the Montessori classroom.

Writing

As soon as a child can hold a pencil correctly he/she is introduced to pre-writing activities, which in turn leads to handwriting exercises as soon as the child is ready.
